At least 60 workers were killed after a gold mine collapsed near El-Nahud in Sudan’s West Kordofan region. The accident took place at the Al-Zaraa gold mine while workers were extracting gold underground. Several parts of the mine reportedly collapsed, trapping workers under the rubble. Fellow miners and local residents immediately began rescue efforts, but the operation has been difficult because of a lack of specialised equipment. Many workers were feared to be trapped inside the collapsed mine. The death toll remains unclear and could rise as rescue and recovery operations continue. Later reports indicated that the number of deaths may have increased beyond the initial figure, with some local sources reporting more than 67 deaths and others reporting 82. The incident has again highlighted safety concerns in Sudan’s informal gold-mining sector, where workers often operate with limited safety equipment. Rescue teams and local residents are continuing efforts to recover victims and search for anyone who may still be trapped.
