The world’s largest cargo ship, the MSC Irina, arrived yesterday at the Vizhinjam International Port in Kerala. It is one of the largest cargo vessels globally, the MSC Irina. This ship has a capacity of 24,346 TEU (equivalent to 20 feet). With 26 decks, this colossal vessel reached the Vizhinjam International Port in Kerala at around 8 AM yesterday. Upon its arrival, a traditional welcome was extended with water being splashed as per custom. This vessel has been docked there until today. Celebrated as an engineering marvel, it is being utilized for cargo transfer between Asian and European countries. This marks the first instance of such a large ship being docked at one of India’s ports. This event signifies that Visakhapatnam is preparing to handle substantial cargo traffic. Regarding this, Karan Adani, the Managing Director of Adani Ports, expressed on his X social media page, “I take pride in welcoming the MSC Irina. This ship has arrived in the South Asian maritime region for the first time. This event is a milestone for Visakhapatnam port. Furthermore, it indicates that India is poised to play a significant role in global shipping traffic.” So far, 75% of the country’s cargo transportation activities have been conducted through foreign ports. This has resulted in a significant loss of revenue for the nation. In this context, the Vizhijam port has been constructed to accommodate large cargo ships. Consequently, the large vessels carrying imported goods to our country will now dock at the Vizhijam port. It is anticipated that this will considerably reduce costs.
