A Special Investigation Team (SIT) will be established to probe the stampede at Chinnaswamy Stadium, which resulted in the deaths of 11 individuals and injuries to 56 others, as communicated by the state government to the Karnataka High Court on Thursday. An FIR has been filed at the Cubbon Park police station under various provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including culpable homicide not amounting to murder (Section 105) and acts endangering human life (Sections 125(1) and (2)). This FIR has been forwarded to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the state for further investigation, with instructions to form a Special Investigation Team within the CID to ensure a thorough inquiry. The stampede occurred at several entry points of the cricket stadium during the Royal Challengers Bangalore’s (RCB) inaugural Indian Premier League (IPL) trophy celebrations on June 4. Among the deceased were five women and six men. More than 250,000 people had assembled around the stadium. Of the 11 fatalities, four took place at Gate 7, two at Gate 6, one at Gate 1, and four at Gates 17-21. Post-mortem examinations have been carried out on all 11 victims, and their bodies have been returned to their families. Of the 56 injured, 50 were treated as outpatients and subsequently discharged, while six remain hospitalized. The injuries varied from minor to severe: 51 were classified as minor, two as moderate, and three as grievous. A magisterial inquiry, led by the Bengaluru Urban deputy commissioner, has also been initiated, with the report anticipated within 15 days. The state government has declared a compensation of Rs 10 lakh for the family of each deceased individual and will also cover all medical expenses for the injured. Additionally, the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) has pledged an extra compensation of Rs 5 lakh.
