President-elect Donald Trump has revealed that billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk and former Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy will head a newly established Department of Government Efficiency, fulfilling a campaign commitment to oversee government spending. In a statement shared on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump emphasized that the department’s mission would be to “dismantle government bureaucracy” and eliminate unnecessary regulations. He stated that Musk and Ramaswamy “will pave the way for my Administration to dismantle Government Bureaucracy, slash excess regulations, cut wasteful expenditures, and restructure Federal Agencies.” The department will be abbreviated as DOGE, a reference to a cryptocurrency associated with Musk and a well-known internet meme. Trump has set a deadline of July 4, 2026, for the department to complete its objectives. Expounding on his rationale, Trump remarked, “A smaller Government, with more efficiency and less bureaucracy, will be the perfect gift to America on the 250th Anniversary of The Declaration of Independence. I am confident they will succeed!”.
Prior to the election, Musk expressed his intention to assist Trump in reducing the federal budget by $2 trillion. He remarked, “This will send shockwaves through the system, and anyone involved in Government waste, which is a lot of people!” in a statement released on Tuesday night. Musk significantly influenced Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign, while Ramaswamy, who previously sought the Republican nomination, endorsed the former president upon withdrawing from the race. Elon Musk has supported Trump in an unprecedented manner for a business figure, which included financing his campaign and transforming the social media platform X into a prominent pro-Trump outlet.
