On Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a defense credit line of USD 200 million for Angola, reaffirming India’s commitment to take strong and decisive action against terrorism and its supporters, a statement made shortly after the recent terror attack in Pahalgam. Following extensive discussions with Angolan President Joao Manuel Goncalves Laurenco, which aimed at enhancing bilateral relations, particularly in the realm of digital public infrastructure, PM Modi emphasized that Laurenco’s visit to India not only paves the way for a new trajectory in their bilateral relations but also fortifies the partnership between India and Africa. He expressed satisfaction in announcing the defense credit line to aid in the modernization of Angola’s defense forces, while also addressing topics such as the repair, overhaul, and supply of defense equipment. Furthermore, PM Modi indicated that India would extend its expertise to Angola in digital public infrastructure, space technology, and capacity building, alongside a commitment to deepen cooperation in healthcare, diamond processing, fertilizers, and critical minerals. He reiterated India’s resolve to take robust action against terrorism and its backers, underscoring the significance of the relationship between India and the African Union, stating, ‘We are partners in progress, and we are pillars of the Global South.’ President Laurenco’s visit to Delhi commenced on Thursday and is scheduled to last four days.
