A famine-like crisis is currently emerging in Gaza, with food and essential services “plummeting to unprecedented levels,” as warned by a UN-backed food security organization. The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) has described this situation as the “worst-case scenario of famine,” highlighting severe shortages of food, clean water, and basic health services in the besieged enclave. Since the onset of Israel’s war on October 7, 2023, nearly 60,000 Palestinians have reportedly lost their lives, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry. Presently, over 470,000 individuals in Gaza, including 71,000 children under the age of five, are facing starvation conditions, as per the latest estimates from the UN. Israel’s comprehensive blockade, which has been in effect since March 2, has effectively severed access to food, medicine, fuel, and humanitarian aid. Reports indicate that more than 1,060 individuals have died while trying to reach food distribution centers. In New York, UN Secretary-General António Guterres remarked that the alert “confirms what we have feared,” specifically that Gaza is on the verge of famine. “The facts are in, and they are undeniable,” he asserted.
“Palestinians in Gaza are experiencing a humanitarian catastrophe of epic proportions. This is not a warning. It is a reality unfolding before our eyes.” The context surrounding this alert is alarming: one in three individuals is now going without food for several days, according to the IPC. Hospitals are overwhelmed, having treated over 20,000 children for acute malnutrition since April. Tragically, at least 16 children under five have succumbed to hunger-related causes since mid-July. This alert follows a May 2025 IPC analysis that anticipated catastrophic levels of food insecurity for the entire population by September. Experts from the platform predict that at least half a million people will fall into IPC Phase 5 – catastrophe – characterized by starvation, destitution, and death. The crisis is fueled by nearly two years of conflict ignited by Hamas-led terror attacks in Israel in October 2023, which resulted in approximately 1,250 fatalities and around 250 individuals taken hostage.Intense combat has resulted in the deaths of thousands and the devastation of 70 percent of Gaza’s infrastructure. Reflecting the persistent worries of aid organizations regarding non-combatants, the IPC evaluation has verified that displacement is widespread, with secure zones diminished to under 12 percent of the total area.
