At least 11 people were killed and 12 others were injured in a shooting at a football ground in Mexico on January 25. The attack took place in Guanajuato state, which is known for high levels of violence. The shooting happened shortly after a local football match had ended, when people were still gathered at the ground. According to Salamanca Mayor Cesar Prieto, a group of armed attackers entered the stadium and opened fire randomly. Ten people died at the spot, while one more died later in the hospital. Among the injured were a woman and a young boy, who are now receiving treatment. The mayor said that criminal violence has been increasing in the city, with some criminal groups trying to weaken the state government and threaten authorities. He warned that such attempts would never succeed and said the incident showed a serious breakdown of social order. He added that investigations have already begun and promised that those responsible would be identified soon. Guanajuato recorded the highest number of murders in Mexico last year, mainly due to clashes between rival drug cartels fighting for control of illegal markets. Although the Mexican government said the national murder rate in 2025 dropped to its lowest level since 2016, experts have warned that these figures may not fully reflect the true level of violence in the country.
