India has announced the schedule for the 2027 population census, which will be conducted in two main phases. The first phase, known as house listing and housing census, will take place from April 1 to September 30 this year. During this period, officials will collect details about buildings, houses, and households across the country. Each state and Union Territory will carry out the survey within a 30-day window fixed by local authorities. The second phase, the actual population census, will be conducted in February 2027. Ahead of the house-listing work, citizens will also be given a 15-day option to submit their details through self-enumeration,making the process more convenient and digital. Census Commissioner Mrityunjay Kumar Narayan said that every building, home, and family in India will be covered. The census is important for planning government policies, welfare schemes, and development programs, as it provides accurate data on population size, housing conditions, and social and economic trends across the country.
