India has taken precautionary steps due to the worsening security situation in Bangladesh by declaring Indian diplomatic postings there as non-family postings. As part of this decision, family members of officials working at the Indian High Commission and consulates in Bangladesh have been advised to return to India. The move comes amid rising incidents of religious unrest and violence in the country, especially concerns over the safety of minority communities. Indian authorities have stated that this step is purely preventive and focused on ensuring safety. Despite this, India confirmed that all five of its diplomatic offices in Bangladesh will continue to function normally and at full capacity, including the High Commission in Dhaka and the consulates in Chattogram, Khulna, Rajshahi, and Sylhet. No timeline has been announced for the return of officials’ families, and details about the number of Indian diplomats in Bangladesh have not been disclosed for security reasons. Since the interim government took charge in Bangladesh in August 2024, India–Bangladesh relations have faced increased strain. Following recent protests, security has been tightened at diplomatic missions in both Delhi and Dhaka, and last month violent demonstrations were reported outside the Indian consulate in Chattogram.
