A mother and son from an Indian-origin family have created history in the United Kingdom by becoming mayors within a week of each other. The family, originally from Rohtak in Haryana, moved to the UK in 2013. Twenty-three-year-old Tushar Kumar has become the youngest mayor of the Elstree and Borehamwood Town Council. With this achievement, he is also believed to be the youngest Indian-origin person to serve as a mayor in British history. Just one week after Tushar took office, his mother Parveen Rani was elected as the first Indian-origin mayor of the Hertsmere Borough Council. Their back-to-back appointments have become a proud moment for the Indian community in the UK. Speaking to PTI, Tushar’s father and businessman Sunil Dahiya said that Tushar was elected mayor on May 13, while Parveen Rani assumed office on May 20. He added that it is a matter of great pride for the entire Indian-origin community to see a mother and son serving as mayors at the same time. The Dahiya family originally belongs to Rohna village in the Sonipat district of Haryana. Before moving to Britain, they had lived in Rohtak for many years.
