Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has praised the introduction of the updated Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) portal as a significant advancement in enhancing citizen-centric digital governance, which is expected to benefit the global diaspora. His remarks were made in response to Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s announcement, who had launched the portal earlier in the post he said ,I have launched the revamped OCI Portal featuring a modern user interface to facilitate a seamless registration process for Overseas Citizens. The new enhancements will encompass improved functionality, heightened security, and a more user-friendly experience,” Shah stated on X. Earlier on Monday, Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah officially inaugurated the updated Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) portal in the national capital, aiming to enhance the digital experience for OCI cardholders. This launch signifies a crucial milestone in the government’s initiative to modernize citizen services for the Indian diaspora.As per the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), the new portal has been created in response to the rapid technological progress observed over the last decade and the feedback received from current OCI cardholders regarding challenges faced with the previous system. “Union Home Minister Amit Shah today unveiled the new Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) portal in New Delhi.
In consideration of the substantial technological advancements over the past decade and the feedback from OCI cardholders, a new OCI portal has been designed to rectify existing issues and improve the user experience,” the MHA stated in an announcement. Officials indicated that the revamped platform addresses previous deficiencies and is crafted to provide a more user-friendly, efficient, and seamless interface for individuals of Indian descent living abroad. The OCI card is granted to individuals of Indian origin who have acquired citizenship in another nation, permitting them lifelong visa-free entry to India along with certain economic and educational privileges.Throughout the years, the need for enhanced digital services and more agile systems has escalated alongside the rising number of OCI holders worldwide. With this introduction, the Ministry of Home Affairs persists in its efforts to advance a digitally empowered governance structure, particularly for Indians residing overseas.
