A powerful 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck the Kumamoto region on Japan’s southern Kyushu Island today, causing concern among residents. Following the earthquake, a tsunami warning was issued for coastal areas.The earthquake was felt in several parts of Japan, including Kumamoto, Nagasaki, Kagoshima, Fukuoka, Saga, Oita and Miyazaki. Emergency warnings were issued in the affected areas. The impact of the earthquake was strongly felt across Kyushu, one of Japan’s major islands.According to Japan’s geological authorities, the epicentre of the earthquake was located at a depth of around 10 kilometres beneath the sea.Following the strong earthquake, a tsunami warning was issued for coastal areas. Waves of up to 1 metre (3.28 feet) were expected, and residents living near the coast were advised to move to safer areas. Reports also said that tsunami waves had already started reaching some areas near Kyushu. So far, there have been no official reports of immediate deaths or major damage.
