New York City has officially designated April 14 as Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar Day, commemorating the 134th anniversary of the birth of the principal architect of India’s Constitution and a renowned figure in the global fight for social justice and equality. Mayor Eric Adams announced this recognition, highlighting Ambedkar’s significant legacy as an innovative economist, political theorist, and relentless champion of human rights. In his proclamation, Adams noted, “Generations of people from around the world have crossed oceans seeking new possibilities in New York City. Their contributions have shaped a vibrant history and enriched our city’s diverse cultural fabric.” He lauded Ambedkar for his steadfast commitment to eradicating caste discrimination and empowering marginalized groups, stating, “Ambedkar challenged social hierarchies and worked to secure rights for farmers and tenants in India.” Having personally endured severe caste discrimination, Ambedkar devoted his life to fostering a society grounded in equity, justice, and inclusion. Furthermore, Adams emphasized the significance of Ambedkar’s powerful call to action: “Educate, agitate, organize.” He expressed that New York City is deeply aligned with these principles, making the proclamation not merely a tribute but also a call to action to uphold Ambedkar’s vision in contemporary society.
