In the last five years, the government has documented 1,617 complaints from Non-Resident Indian (NRI) women alleging abandonment by their husbands while living abroad, as reported by the Ministry of External Affairs in Parliament on March 27. Although state governments gather data on women whose husbands abandon them within India and subsequently relocate overseas, the Ministry of External Affairs specifically monitors complaints from those left behind in foreign countries. Indian embassies and consulates provide essential support, including counseling, legal assistance, and emergency services through round-the-clock helplines. In instances of abandonment, the Ministry collaborates with state authorities to address these situations in accordance with existing legal frameworks.
