On January 9, Prime Minister Narendra Modi commended the Indian diaspora for their remarkable contributions during his address at the 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas held in Bhubaneswar. He underscored India’s swift advancement in the 21st century, emphasizing the nation’s capability to satisfy the global demand for skilled professionals. In his remarks, Modi conveyed that the Indian government views it as their duty to assist the diaspora in times of crisis. He remarked, “21st century India is advancing at an extraordinary pace and scale. For many decades to come, India will continue to be home to the world’s largest population of young and skilled individuals. India is poised to meet the global need for skilled talent.” Modi expressed profound appreciation for the diaspora’s support and contributions, recognizing their crucial role in bolstering India’s international standing. He stated, “I derive immense joy from meeting all of you. The love and blessings I have received from you will always remain etched in my memory. Today, I extend my gratitude to you all, for it is because of you that I can hold my head high. Over the past decade, I have engaged with numerous world leaders, all of whom commend the Indian diaspora in their respective nations. A significant factor behind this admiration is the social values you embody.” He further emphasized the importance of the diaspora’s comfort and safety, declaring, “Your welfare is our utmost priority. We regard it as our responsibility to support our diaspora during crises, regardless of their location.

This principle is central to India’s current foreign policy.” Earlier that day, Modi launched the Pravasi Bharatiya Express, a special tourist train dedicated to the Indian diaspora, with its inaugural journey commencing in Bhubaneswar, marking a notable achievement for the event. Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi also addressed the gathering, highlighting the state’s rich cultural heritage and its contributions to India’s classical arts, such as Odissi dance and Pattachitra paintings. He emphasized the renowned handloom textiles of Sambalpur along with the state’s scenic beauty. Upon his arrival for the inauguration, Modi was warmly welcomed by Chief Minister Majhi and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar. The Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) Convention plays a crucial role in connecting with the Indian diaspora and promoting interaction among its constituents. This year’s PBD Convention is centered around the theme “Diaspora’s Contribution to a Viksit Bharat” (Developed India).
