Prime Minister Modi was warmly received by the Indian community in China. On Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was greeted with enthusiasm by the Indian diaspora upon his arrival at Binhai International Airport in Tianjin for a two-day official visit to participate in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in China. He was welcomed by high-ranking officials from both China and India. This visit marks PM Modi’s first trip to China in seven years. The attendees expressed their admiration and support by chanting “Bharat Mata ki Jai” and “Vande Mataram” as they welcomed him. Subsequently, PM Modi enjoyed a performance by Chinese artists who played Indian classical instruments such as the sitar, santoor, and tabla at the hotel. These performers have dedicated years to learning Indian classical music and dance. PM Modi is scheduled to attend the SCO Summit on Sunday, August 31, where he will engage in bilateral discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines. He is also expected to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin during the summit.
The SCO consists of ten member countries: India, Belarus, China, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. This summit holds particular significance for India, especially following the implementation of the United States’ 50 percent tariffs. Among these, a 25 percent tariff was specifically imposed on New Delhi for its purchase of Russian oil. India and China have undertaken various measures to improve their bilateral relations. Both nations have agreed to resume direct flights, facilitate trade through the Lipulekh Pass in Uttarakhand, Shipki La Pass in Himachal Pradesh, and Nathu La Pass in Sikkim, and ease visa processes for tourists, businesses, media, and other visitors traveling in both directions.
