On October 22, 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi commenced his journey to Kazan, Russia, to attend the 16th BRICS Summit. In his statement prior to departure, Mr. Modi emphasized India’s commitment to the collaborative efforts within BRICS, which has become a significant forum for dialogue on various global developmental issues, including reformed multilateralism, climate change, economic collaboration, and the establishment of resilient supply chains, as well as the promotion of cultural and interpersonal connections. He further remarked that the recent expansion of BRICS, which welcomed new members last year, has enhanced its inclusivity and broadened its agenda for the benefit of the global community. This year’s summit marks the first gathering of the group following this expansion. The theme for the summit, “strengthening multilateralism for just global development and security,” will serve as a vital platform for leaders to engage in discussions on pressing global challenges, as previously noted by the Ministry of External Affairs. The summit is set to commence on Tuesday, with the primary discussions scheduled for Wednesday, October 23, 2024.

This year, under Russia’s leadership, over 250 meetings and events related to BRICS have been proposed. Among the key initiatives are the integration of invited nations as full members of BRICS and the advancement of the BRICS partner country model, along with the identification of potential partner countries to be presented at the upcoming Summit, as indicated by officials. Prime Minister Modi remarked, “Following the Annual Summit scheduled for July 2024 in Moscow, my visit to Kazan will further strengthen the Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership between India and Russia.” During this visit, Mr. Modi is anticipated to engage in bilateral discussions with various leaders from BRICS member nations and those invited to Kazan. Notably, he is expected to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin, where the two leaders will likely address the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The formal establishment of BRIC occurred after the leaders of Russia, India, and China convened in St. Petersburg in 2006, and it was later expanded to BRICS with the addition of South Africa in 2010.
