Heavy snowfall has been reported in several areas along the India-China border, including Nathu La Pass, Kupup, and Tsomgo Lake in Sikkim. The early morning snow has led to a sharp drop in temperature across the region, with several high-altitude zones recording temperatures below zero degrees Celsius. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), severe weather conditions are expected to continue for the next 24 hours. The department has issued a red alert for Sikkim, warning of possible disruptions to transportation and daily activities due to heavy snow and poor visibility. Vehicular movement along key mountain routes has already been affected, and authorities have advised tourists and residents to avoid unnecessary travel. The snowfall, though creating a picturesque winter landscape, poses challenges for the Indian Army stationed in the border areas, as well as for local traders and transporters who rely on the mountain passes for movement and supply chains. The IMD has also cautioned that the cold wave conditions are likely to intensify in the coming days, with further drops in temperature across the Himalayan belt, including parts of Arunachal Pradesh and North Bengal.
