Filmmaker SS Rajamouli expressed his excitement following the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ recognition of his internationally acclaimed film RRR in the announcement of a new Oscar category for Stunt Design, which will make its debut at the 100th Academy Awards. The Academy disclosed this significant addition on April 10, stating that films released in 2027 will qualify for consideration, with the inaugural awards in this category scheduled for 2028. In its promotional materials, the Academy featured RRR alongside Tom Cruise’s Mission: Impossible, celebrating innovative stunt work in the film industry. Rajamouli shared his enthusiasm on social media, stating, “At last!! After a 100-year wait!!! Ecstatic for the new Oscars stunt design category… Thrilled to see #RRRMovie’s action visual shining in the announcement!” He expressed gratitude towards director David Leitch, Chris O’Hara, the stunt community, and the Academy’s leadership. Looking ahead, Rajamouli is preparing to direct SSB29, which will star Mahesh Babu and is written by Vijayendra Prasad.
