The Embassy of India has released a public advisory concerning a scam in which fraudsters are posing as embassy officials over the phone to extract money and personal information. The scam perpetrators are employing a method known as “spoofing” to make their calls seem as though they are originating directly from the embassy’s telephone lines. As per the advisory, these individuals are making false claims, such as mistakes in consular forms or unresolved complaints with Indian police or Interpol. They subsequently try to acquire personal information or request money from their victims. In its announcement, the embassy emphasized that its officials do not make phone calls to request personal information from either Indian or foreign nationals. It encourages anyone who receives such a call to report it without delay.
