The Mettur dam reached its full capacity on July 30 due to heavy rainfall.

On August 12, 2024, the Stanley Reservoir in Salem, Tamil Nadu, reached 120 feet for the second time this year.

The Mettur dam had before reached maximum capacity on July 30 as heavy rainfall hit the surrounding areas.

The water level was kept constant for the next ten days, during which time the inflow into the dam was emptied into the Cauvery River for delta irrigation.

The level dropped below 120 feet only on August 9.

As heavy rains began on August 10, the dam’s inflow increased again.

In the early hours of Monday, the dam’s water level reached 120 feet and its storage level was 93.47 TMC.

As a result, the volume of water drained into the Cauvery for delta irrigation increased from 21,500 cusecs to 26,000 cusecs.

Employees of Water Resources Department (WRD) said the inflow into the dam would be totally emptied into the river.

Flood alerts were given to the people living in low-lying areas, many officials added.

They added that once the inflow returns to normal, water will be discharged from the dam in response to irrigation demands.

Flood alerts are given to in and around areas of metur dam, salem district, Tamilnadu.
