On Tuesday, US President Donald Trump announced the introduction of a missile defense initiative known as the ‘Golden Dome,’ aimed at safeguarding the nation from potential attacks, with an expected operational timeline of approximately three years. The president revealed an initial funding allocation of $25 billion for this project, which he anticipates could ultimately reach a total expenditure of around $175 billion. ‘During my campaign, I assured the American populace that I would establish a state-of-the-art missile defense system,’ Trump stated at the White House. ‘I am now delighted to confirm that we have officially chosen the design for this advanced system.’ He further elaborated that once fully operational, the Golden Dome would possess the capability to intercept missiles launched from any location globally, including those originating from space, emphasizing its critical importance for the nation’s security and survival. General Michael Guetlein of the US Space Force has been appointed to oversee the initiative, with Canada expressing interest in participating. While Trump estimates the overall cost at $175 billion, the Congressional Budget Office has projected that the expenses for space-based interceptors to counter a limited number of intercontinental ballistic missiles could range from $161 billion to $542 billion over a span of 20 years. The Golden Dome aims for broader objectives, as Trump indicated it will incorporate next-generation technologies across land, sea, and space, including advanced sensors and interceptors deployed in space. Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth, who spoke alongside Trump, noted that the system is designed to defend the homeland against various threats, including cruise missiles, ballistic missiles, hypersonic missiles, and drones, whether conventional or nuclear. The United States has acquired significant practical experience in missile and drone defense in recent years, with US systems successfully countering sophisticated Russian missiles in Ukraine, while American aircraft and naval vessels played a crucial role in defending Israel against Iranian assaults last year, consistently intercepting missiles and drones targeting ships from Yemen’s Tehran-backed Huthi rebels.
