US fighter jets reportedly carried out a surprise attack on Iran’s Larak Island, nearly a month after the ceasefire between the United States and Iran ended. The island is located near the strategically important Strait of Hormuz. According to reports, the US strikes destroyed two rocket-launching sites, a vessel used to deploy sea mines, and several boats. Several Iranian military personnel were reportedly killed, while many others were injured in the attack. The ceasefire between the US and Iran ended on August 17. Around a month later, US aircraft targeted Larak Island late on Sunday night. Iran responded to the US attack by launching missiles at two US air bases in Jordan. Ballistic missiles launched from northern Iran were aimed at the King Hussein and Al-Azraq air bases. Most of the missiles were reportedly intercepted in the air, but some reached the bases and exploded.
Iran also reportedly launched a drone attack targeting Al Minhad Air Base near Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. The drones were destroyed before reaching their target. Iran’s military has warned that it will respond strongly to what it described as US aggression. The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important routes for crude oil transportation. On August 18, US President Donald Trump reportedly said that the United States would take control of the strategic waterway. A map shared by Trump on social media on August 23 also reportedly showed the Strait of Hormuz as part of the United States. Meanwhile, Iran and Oman recently held talks and reportedly reached an important agreement. Under the agreement, the two countries planned to cooperate in managing the Strait of Hormuz without US involvement. The recent US strike on Larak Island is believed to be linked to the island’s strategic location along the route used by oil tankers passing through the Strait of Hormuz.
