Singapore, April 9, 2022 – The vibrant tapestry of Singapore’s Indian community came alive last night at the Indian New Year (INY) Cultural Show 2022, held at the grand ballroom of One Farrer Hotel. Organized by the Little India Shopkeepers and Heritage Association (LISHA), the two-and-a-half-hour extravaganza dazzled an intimate audience of 200 invited guests with a spectacular showcase of traditional dances representing 15 Indian communities in Singapore.

A Celebration of Unity in Diversity:

True to its theme of “Many Cultures, One Community,” the event transformed the ballroom into a melting pot of colours, rhythms, and traditions. Each of the participating groups—from the Tamil, Malayalee, and Punjabi communities to the lesser-represented Assamese, Sindhi, and Indian Peranakan troupes—delivered breathtaking 5 to 8-minute performances that left the audience enthralled.

Highlights of the evening included:

  • A high-energy Punjabi Bhangra that had guests clapping along to the infectious dhol beats.
  • The graceful storytelling of Bengali dance, with its delicate movements and expressive gestures.
  • A mesmerizing Malayalee Mohiniyattam performance, showcasing Kerala’s classical elegance.
  • The vibrant Garba by the Gujarati community, radiating joy and festivity.

A Safe and Intimate Affair:

In adherence to Singapore’s safety measures, LISHA ensured the event complied with all Safe Management Measures (SMM), capping attendance at just 50% of the venue’s capacity. The English-hosted program flowed seamlessly, with smooth transitions between performances and engaging commentary that educated the audience about each community’s unique cultural heritage. As guests departed, they were treated to specially packed bento boxes featuring Indian delicacies—a thoughtful parting gift that extended the evening’s warmth beyond the ballroom.

A Resounding Success:

“This year’s INY show was particularly special as it brought together so many different Indian communities under one roof,” said a LISHA spokesperson. “The overwhelming response proves that Singaporeans cherish our diverse cultural heritage, and we’re already looking forward to next year’s edition.” With its dazzling performances, warm camaraderie, and flawless execution, the Indian New Year Cultural Show 2022 once again proved why it remains one of the most anticipated events in Singapore’s cultural calendar.
