California Revokes 17,000 Commercial Driver’s Licenses for Immigrants

California is cancelling 17,000 commercial driver’s licenses given to immigrants because the license expiration dates were longer than the time the drivers were legally allowed to stay in the U.S. This decision follows criticism from the Trump administration, especially after a deadly crash in Florida caused by a truck driver who was not authorized to be in the country. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said the move proves California made mistakes in issuing these licenses. Governor Gavin Newsom’s office explained that all affected drivers actually had valid federal work permits. However, California law requires a driver’s license to expire no later than the end of the person’s legal stay in the U.S. The state first avoided giving details but later confirmed this legal rule was the reason for revoking the licenses.
