An explosion was reported at Iran’s southern port city of Bandar Abbas on Saturday, January 31, according to Iranian media. Officials said the cause of the blast is still under investigation. Iran’s Tasnim news agency denied social media claims that the explosion targeted a commander of the Revolutionary Guard navy. It said these reports were completely false. Bandar Abbas is a major port located on the Strait of Hormuz, an important sea route between Iran and Oman. Around 20 percent of the world’s oil shipments pass through this narrow waterway. The explosion comes at a time of rising tensions between Iran and the United States. Relations have worsened after Iran faced its largest protests in three years, which began in December due to economic problems.

Iranian authorities said the protests posed a serious challenge to the country’s leadership. An Iranian official told Reuters that at least 5,000 people were killed during the unrest, including 500 security personnel. Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump said an “armada” was moving toward Iran. Sources said he was considering several options, including targeted strikes on Iranian security forces. Earlier on Saturday, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian accused the United States, Israel, and European countries of taking advantage of Iran’s economic difficulties and encouraging unrest within the country.
