A student leader in Bangladesh, Mottaleb Shikder, was seriously injured after unidentified attackers shot him in the head. He has been admitted to hospital and is said to be in critical condition. Last year, Bangladesh witnessed major student protests that led to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina stepping down. One of the key leaders of those protests, Sherif Usman Hadi, was shot dead earlier this month. On the 12th, masked men on a motorcycle followed him while he was travelling in a cycle rickshaw and shot him in the head before fleeing. He was first treated at a hospital in Dhaka and later taken to Singapore for further treatment. However, he died a few days ago. His death triggered widespread unrest and violent incidents across the country. In this context, another student leader, Mottaleb Shikder (32), was shot today. He is the central coordinator of the labour wing of the National Citizens Party (NCP). The attack took place in the Majid Sarani area of Khulna city while he was travelling in a rickshaw. Unknown assailants opened fire on him and escaped. Shikder suffered a severe head injury and was rushed to Khulna Medical College Hospital. According to Bangladeshi media reports, he was shot on the left side of his head and lost a large amount of blood. He is currently undergoing emergency treatment Following the incident, police have launched an intensive search operation to identify and arrest the attackers.
