Chennai’s Drug Crisis: High Court’s Call for Action

The Madras High Court hearing on the case involving protests against the relocation of slum people in Chennai on yesterday .

According to that case, drugs, including ganja, are commonly available in the residential areas of Kannagi Nagar, Perumbakkam, and Durai Pakkam.

Drugs are easily accessible to young people, the advocate general stated in his report.

The case was heard yesterday in front of Chief Justice D. Krishnakumar and Justice PP Balaji.

They questioned, Are the police aware that drugs are accessible everywhere in Tamil Nadu?

School children are the most prone to drug addiction.

Then the judges asked Public prosecutor, Why did the authorities not take any action .

Even though the Advocate Commissioner had indicated in his report that drug rehabilitation centers should be set up in these areas.

To set up separate body to investigate drug-related cases or should it be handed over to another independent body? They questioned

The government stated,The supply of drugs in Tamil Nadu has been controlled.

The number of offenses has also decreased dramatically.

They said, A lot of police officers have been placed in city areas of Purumbakkam and Kannagi Nagar to avoid any offences.

Finally, A detailed report will be filed on the basis of the Advocate Commissioner’s report, the government said.
