The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) made a remarkable comeback on Tuesday, effectively halting the Congress party’s celebrations and securing an extraordinary victory for a historic third term in Haryana, contrary to the predictions of exit polls. In Jammu and Kashmir, the political landscape shifted dramatically as the National Conference-Congress alliance achieved a significant victory, with Farooq Abdullah designating his son, Omar Abdullah, as the prospective Chief Minister. The BJP claimed 48 out of 90 seats in Haryana, surpassing the majority threshold of 46, while Congress secured 37 seats. In Jammu and Kashmir, where elections for the 90-member Assembly were conducted for the first time in a decade, the Congress-NC coalition won 48 seats, with the BJP obtaining 29 seats. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), led by Mehbooba Mufti, managed to secure three seats, and in an unexpected turn, AAP’s Mehraj Malik emerged victorious in Doda. Omar Abdullah, who won in both Budgam and Ganderbal constituencies, criticized the BJP, stating, “those who sought to destroy us were decimated instead.” When questioned about the formation of the government, he advised waiting until all results were officially announced. The prospect of a hung assembly in the Union Territory has raised concerns among opposition parties, as the five MLAs nominated by the Lieutenant Governor could significantly influence the government formation process. Nayab Singh Saini is recognized as the principal strategist responsible for the BJP’s achievements in Haryana. Following his ascension to the position of Chief Minister, succeeding Manohar Lal Khattar, Saini, who belongs to the OBC community, emerged as the prominent figure in the BJP’s electoral campaign. In a notable development, Congress candidate and wrestler Vinesh Phogat made a successful debut in the Julana constituency, securing victory with a total of 64,548 votes. She triumphed over her closest competitor, BJP’s Yogesh Kumar, by a margin of 6,553 votes. Phogat’s candidacy was put forth by the Congress party after her disappointing experience at the Paris Olympics.
