An Iranian surveillance drone was shot down after it aggressively approached a US Navy warship, triggering fresh international concern and raising tensions between the United States and Iran. The incident comes at a sensitive time, as both countries were preparing for important diplomatic talks aimed at avoiding direct military conflict. Tensions had already been rising in the region following reports that Iranian boats and drones attempted to stop the oil tanker MV Stena Imperative near the Strait of Hormuz, a key global shipping route. According to the US military’s Central Command, the incident took place in international waters of the Arabian Sea, about 500 miles from Iran’s coast, where the US aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln was on patrol. The Iranian Shahed-139 drone reportedly ignored multiple warnings and continued to move toward the US vessel, prompting a US F-35C fighter jet to shoot it down in self-defense. The US said there were no casualties or damage. However, Iranian media claimed the drone had successfully completed a surveillance mission, highlighting differing accounts. The event underscores ongoing tensions in the Middle East, especially around the Strait of Hormuz, through which a major share of the world’s oil supply passes, making any military incident in the area a serious global concern.
