JD Vance arrived in New Delhi on Monday morning, accompanied by his wife Usha, their three children, and senior officials, marking the commencement of a four-day visit that intertwines personal and political significance. This trip represents Vance’s inaugural official visit to India since assuming office, while also serving as a familial return, as Usha Vance is the daughter of Indian immigrants. During their stay, the family visited the Central Cottage Industries Emporium (CCIE) in Janpath, New Delhi, where they purchased various traditional Indian handicrafts, including wooden artifacts, handloom textiles, and brass items. The CCIE is a government-operated showroom that features authentic handicrafts and handloom products from across the nation. India’s Ministry of External Affairs regards this visit as more than a mere ceremonial occasion, emphasizing its official nature. Vance is scheduled to meet with the Prime Minister, and given the Comprehensive Strategic Global Partnership between the United States and India, discussions will encompass a wide range of pertinent issues. Officials express optimism that this visit will further strengthen bilateral relations.
The United States stands as India’s largest trading partner, with two-way trade reaching $129 billion in 2024, resulting in a significant surplus of $45.7 billion in favor of India. Reports indicate that India is considering reducing tariffs on over half of its imports from the U.S., valued at $41.8 billion last year, as part of an evolving trade agreement. While no formal agreements are anticipated during this visit, both nations are laying the groundwork for significant defense and trade collaborations. Following Prime Minister Modi’s meeting with President Trump in February, a joint statement highlighted aspirations in areas such as artificial intelligence, energy, semiconductors, critical minerals, and arms co-production.
