Due to the heavy rainfall in Kolkata, seven individuals lost their lives due to electrocution. The entire city is engulfed in floodwaters, resulting in a complete halt to normal life. Since Monday night, incessant heavy rain has been falling in Kolkata due to a low-pressure area that developed in the northwestern Bay of Bengal. As a result, severe flooding has occurred on the roads. This has led to water entering many homes and residential complexes in the city.Due to severe disruptions in transportation services throughout Kolkata, thousands of passengers were stranded in various areas. The heavy rainfall in Kolkata has significantly affected flight operations at Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport, resulting in the cancellation of over 30 flights. As the recent heavy rains have paralyzed the normal life of the people in Kolkata and some districts, the West Bengal government has announced a Durga Puja holiday for educational institutions run by the government starting today (Sept. 23). In response to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s appeal to prevent the adverse effects caused by heavy rainfall, State Education Minister Pratyah Basu announced that all educational institutions run by the government will be closed on September 24 and 25.
