US President Donald Trump enacted the “One Big Beautiful Bill,” a comprehensive package of tax reductions and spending cuts, during a ceremony at the White House on Friday. This event signifies a significant legislative achievement, occurring just a day after the narrowly approved bill passed through the Republican-controlled House of Representatives. “I’ve never seen people so happy in our country because of that, because so many different groups of people are being taken care of: the military, civilians of all types, jobs of all types,” Trump remarked during the signing ceremony, expressing gratitude to House Speaker Mike Johnson and Senate Majority Leader John Thune for guiding the bill through Congress. “So you have the biggest tax cut, the biggest spending cut, the largest border security investment in American history,” Trump further stated. The signing occurred on the South Lawn amidst a celebratory July 4th event, which included military flyovers featuring stealth bombers and fighter jets that had recently engaged in US operations against nuclear sites in Iran. The occasion attracted hundreds of participants, comprising Trump supporters, congressional allies, military families, and White House personnel.

The legislation, viewed as a fundamental element of Trump’s agenda for his second term, was passed by a narrow margin of 218-214 after an intense debate on the House floor. It encompasses measures to make the 2017 tax cuts permanent, implement extensive spending reductions, and finance a robust immigration enforcement strategy. A key aspect of the bill is a USD 350 billion plan for border and national security. This allocation includes USD 46 billion designated for the expansion of the US-Mexico border wall, USD 45 billion for 100,000 migrant detention beds, and a recruitment initiative for immigration enforcement, which includes hiring 10,000 new ICE officers, each receiving a USD 10,000 signing bonus. The successful passage of the bill represents a significant political triumph for Trump and his Republican supporters, who contend that the package will stimulate economic growth. Nevertheless, an impartial assessment forecasts that the initiative will increase the existing national debt by over USD 3 trillion, which currently stands at USD 36.2 trillion. In spite of some Republican legislators expressing apprehensions regarding the substantial expense of the bill and its repercussions on healthcare programs, only two out of the House’s 220 Republicans ultimately cast their votes against it. All 212 Democrats opposed the legislation. House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries gave an extensive speech on the floor that lasted for eight hours and 46 minutes, condemning the bill as a significant advantage for the affluent at the cost of vulnerable Americans.
