The U.S. Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) has granted technical assistance to Haryana Airports Development Corporation Limited (HADC) to aid in the redevelopment of Hisar airport, transforming it into a modern integrated aviation hub. Announced on December 10, this grant is intended to facilitate the conversion of Maharaja Agrasen International Airport into a significant cargo and logistics center, thereby enhancing air cargo capacity within the National Capital Region (NCR). USTDA Director Enoh T. Ebong remarked that this collaboration with HADC reflects a strong commitment to advancing the civil aviation sector in India. He emphasized that the project will not only improve the redevelopment of Hisar airport but also bolster local supply chains and create opportunities for U.S. companies to provide technological contributions to the initiative.
Hisar airport, which has been operational since 1967, has primarily served general and business aviation, including private aircraft operations and pilot training. However, its limited infrastructure and the considerable distance—approximately three hours by car to the nearest international airport—have hindered its potential as a hub for air cargo services. The USTDA grant aims to overcome these limitations by supporting the airport’s evolution into a cargo-focused facility, thereby promoting bilateral trade and investment in aviation infrastructure while enhancing the regional supply chain network.Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini praised this partnership as a testament to the progress and collaboration between India and the United States. He stated that this alliance will utilize USTDA’s global expertise to transform Hisar into a comprehensive cargo complex, thereby assisting India in meeting its aviation infrastructure development objectives.
The redevelopment initiative is in harmony with India’s overarching objective to enhance its civil aviation infrastructure, which includes the integration of regional airports into international supply chains. U.S. Ambassador Eric Garcetti highlighted the enduring collaboration between the United States and India in promoting advancements in the civil aviation industry since 2007. He remarked, “Through partnerships like this, the U.S. and India are collaboratively shaping the future of civil aviation.” The Hisar airport project is anticipated to stimulate economic growth, promote trade, and establish the airport as a significant contributor to India’s expanding aviation and logistics framework.
