The West Bengal Legislative Assembly has unanimously approved a bill to impose death penalty on sex offenders.
The ‘Aparajita Women and Children (West Bengal Criminal Laws Amendment) Bill, 2024’ to deal with sexual violence has been passed by a majority in the state assembly.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s announcement has been welcomed. A special session of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly was held yesterday.
The Bill is passed in the Legislative Assembly. State Law Minister Molloy Khattak introduced the Bill in the Assembly.
During the assembly debate, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said, “This is a historic, exceptional bill.
Anyone with decent intentions would accept this. She asked the BJP legislators to urge the state governor to sign the bill.
Oposition parties supported the bill. Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari expressed his full support for the bill.
At the same time, he proposed some amendments in the bill.
However, those amendments were not accepted.

After the debate on the bill, a vote on accounts was held.
Subsequently, the bill was declared unanimously passed.
The death penalty can be imposed if the victim is killed or physically maimed as a result of the sex offender’s conduct.
Finally , The bill was passed to make rapists and accomplices face prison terms without parole.
After the Governor’s assent, the bill becomes law.
