Union Minister for Cooperation Amit Shah will inaugurate Bharat Taxi, India’s first ride-hailing service based on a cooperative model, in New Delhi today. The launch is seen as an important step in strengthening the country’s cooperative movement and providing affordable and people-friendly transport options in cities. Bharat Taxi is designed to place drivers, known as Sarathis, at the center of ownership and operations, allowing them more control over their earnings and daily work. The service is run by Sahakar Taxi Cooperative Limited and is supported by professionals with experience from successful cooperatives like Amul. While it is not a direct Government of India project, it has received strong institutional support. The platform also focuses on passenger safety, with driver verification, a dedicated helpline, and 35 special help booths set up in coordination with the Delhi Police to handle complaints and emergencies.
