Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney arrived in Mumbai on Friday with his wife, Diana Fox Carney, beginning his first official visit to India. They were received at the airport by Maharashtra Minister Jaykumar Rawal. India’s Ministry of External Affairs said the visit is an important step towards strengthening ties between the two countries. This is the first official visit by a Canadian Prime Minister in recent years, following a period of strained relations under former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Carney is expected to meet top business leaders in Mumbai before travelling to New Delhi for talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on March 2. During the visit, both leaders are expected to discuss expanding cooperation in trade, energy, technology, artificial intelligence, culture, and defence. Carney will also attend the India-Canada CEOs’ Forum in Delhi. India is currently one of the world’s fastest-growing major economies, and in 2024 it was Canada’s seventh-largest trading partner, with bilateral trade reaching $30.8 billion. Last year, Modi and Carney met on the sidelines of the G20 Summit, where they set a target of increasing trade between the two countries to $50 billion by 2030. Both nations have expressed commitment to strengthening economic and diplomatic ties through new partnerships and continued dialogue.
