Economist Krishnamurthy V. Subramanian has received the University of Chicago’s Alumni Award for Professional Achievement, becoming the first Indian economist to get this honor in the award’s 85-year history. Subramanian served as the Chief Economic Adviser to the Government of India from 2018 to 2021 and later represented India as Executive Director at the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The award places him among famous past winners, including Nobel Prize winners and global thinkers like Paul Samuelson, Gary Becker, Claudia Goldin, Carl Sagan, and Philip Kotler. The University recognized Subramanian for his important work on India’s Economic Surveys, which were written during his time as Chief Economic Adviser. These reports were described as landmark documents that helped shape India’s economic policies, focusing on self-reliance, competitive markets, and inclusive growth. His early analysis during the COVID-19 pandemic, where he explained the crisis as a supply-side shock and predicted a V-shaped economic recovery, also helped strengthen confidence in India’s economy.

Subramanian wrote three Economic Surveys, discussing economic reforms, public investment, and long-term growth strategies at a time when the world economy faced uncertainty during the pandemic. Later, at the IMF, he worked on economic issues affecting South Asia and emerging markets, including topics like global supply chains and economic challenges in developing countries. Reacting to the award, Subramanian said he felt deeply honored to be recognized for work done from India and for India. He also said it was a privilege to follow the path of great Indian scientists and thinkers like C. V. Raman, Homi J. Bhabha, Vikram Sarabhai, and M. S. Swaminathan. Currently, he works as a Professor of Finance at the Indian School of Business. He holds a B.Tech from IIT Kanpur, an MBA from IIM Calcutta, and a PhD from the University of Chicago. With this achievement, he has now received distinguished alumni awards from all three institutions. The recognition also highlights India’s growing role in the global economy, as the country continues to focus on economic reforms, digital infrastructure, and stronger supply chains to maintain its growth. The University of Chicago is one of the world’s most influential institutions in economics, and its scholars have played a major role in shaping modern economic thinking around the world.
