The designation “Gulf of Mexico” is widely acknowledged on an international scale, as stated by Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum on January 8, in response to President-elect Donald Trump’s proposal to alter the name of the water body. Trump had suggested on January 6 that the Gulf of Mexico be renamed the “Gulf of America.” Seizing the moment to critique Trump, Sheinbaum remarked that he appeared disconnected from current realities, humorously suggesting that he had been misinformed and believed Felipe Calderón was still in office, referring to the former president who served from 2006 to 2012. Sheinbaum further emphasized that in Mexico, the authority rests with the people. During a press conference, she also presented a map illustrating Mexico’s historical territory, which encompassed areas now within the United States, and playfully remarked, “Mexican America, that sounds nice,” while smiling.
