Following the suspension of essential funding for Harvard University, the Trump administration has issued a warning that the nation’s most affluent educational institution could forfeit its ability to enroll international students unless it complies with demands to address alleged “anti-Semitism” on its campus. Reports indicate that the administration has also formally contacted the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to consider revoking the tax-exempt status of the Ivy League school, citing its purported inaction regarding hostility towards Jewish individuals on campus. Recently, President Donald Trump has intensified his focus on elite universities, which have been at the center of intense protests related to Israel’s conflict with Hamas in Gaza, by cutting their federal funding and instructing immigration officials to deport foreign student demonstrators, including those holding green cards. In a significant escalation of the Trump administration’s actions against Ivy League institutions, the Department of Homeland Security has stated that Harvard will lose its capacity to enroll foreign students if it fails to comply with requests for information regarding certain visa holders. A letter was sent to Harvard demanding documentation on what was described as the “illegal and violent activities” of its foreign student visa holders by April 30.Should Harvard be unable to confirm its adherence to reporting requirements, it risks losing the privilege of enrolling foreign students.
In addition to the termination of two Department of Homeland Security grants amounting to over $2.7 million. Governor Kristi Noem remarked that with a $53.2 billion endowment, Harvard is capable of funding its own turmoil, asserting that an “anti-American, pro-Hamas ideology” is present at the institution. Harvard has previously stated its commitment to combating antisemitism and other forms of prejudice while upholding academic freedom and the right to protest. The university contends that there is no legal justification for revoking its tax-exempt status, arguing that such a move would be unprecedented, undermine its financial aid for students, and potentially lead to the abandonment of some critical medical research programs. The Trump administration has warned universities of potential reductions in federal funding due to pro-Palestinian demonstrations on campuses, which have emerged in response to the severe military actions taken by Israel in Gaza following a deadly attack by Hamas militants in October 2023. Trump characterizes these demonstrators as threats to foreign policy, labeling them as antisemitic and sympathetic to Hamas. However, the protesters, including various Jewish organizations, argue that the administration inaccurately equates their calls for Palestinian rights and their critiques of Israel’s military actions with support for extremism and antisemitism. Additionally, the Trump administration is pursuing the deportation of certain foreign protesters and has canceled hundreds of visas nationwide.
