Mumbai will host The Earthshot Prize in November 2026, marking the first time the prestigious global environmental award will be held in India, with the announcement made on February 17 highlighting India’s growing role in climate leadership. Founded in 2020 by Prince William, the Prize was inspired by John F. Kennedy’s 1962 Moonshot speech and aims to find and scale practical environmental solutions within a decade; so far it has identified over 5,600 innovations from 156 countries, awarded £25 million to winners, and helped finalists secure more than $500 million in funding. The Mumbai event will conclude with an awards ceremony where five environmental leaders will each receive £1 million, alongside a major summit bringing together global business leaders, investors, and climate innovators. India already has the highest number of winners and finalists, including S4S Technologies and Boomitra for their work in reducing food waste and promoting regenerative agriculture, as well as Kheyti and Takachar for supporting climate-resilient farming and cutting agricultural burning. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said hosting the event will showcase India’s commitment to turning climate goals into action, and Mumbai will join past host cities such as Rio de Janeiro, Cape Town, Singapore, Boston, and London as a global stage for environmental progress.
