Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) may soon see a major change in ownership, and the name gaining the most attention is American tech billionaire Sanjay Govil. Known for his work in the tech world and his growing influence in global cricket, Govil is now considered a strong contender to buy one of the Indian Premier League’s most popular franchises. His Welsh Fire team, co-owned with Glamorgan Cricket Club, has reportedly emerged as a serious bidder. With RCB valued at nearly $2 billion, Govil is believed to have both the interest and financial strength to pursue the team.
Govil’s rise in cricket has been fast and international. A Maryland resident, he built his wealth by founding Infinite, a digital engineering and IT services company. He has also invested heavily in the sport through Major League Cricket, where he purchased the Washington Freedom franchise in 2023 and helped shape it into a top contender under coach Ricky Ponting and captain Steve Smith. Meanwhile, RCB — originally bought by Vijay Mallya in 2008 and now owned by Diageo — remains one of the IPL’s biggest brands, boosted by star player Virat Kohli and the league’s largest social media following. With Diageo expected to consider selling the team by early 2026, Govil’s potential takeover is becoming a major talking point in cricket circles.
