A 24-year-old American YouTuber has been apprehended in India for unlawfully attempting to engage with the Sentinelese, one of the most secluded Indigenous groups globally, residing on North Sentinel Island in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The individual has been identified as Mykhailo Viktorovych Polyakov from Scottsdale, Arizona. He was arrested on March 31, shortly after he briefly set foot on the restricted island, which is prohibited under Indian law to safeguard its uncontacted residents. Authorities claim that Polyakov utilized GPS for navigation, observed the island with binoculars, used a whistle to attract attention, and left behind a coconut and a can of Diet Coke. Additionally, he allegedly recorded his visit and collected sand before returning to his boat. Local fishermen notified the authorities, leading to Polyakov’s arrest in Port Blair. He is currently in 14-day judicial custody, with a court hearing scheduled for April 17. If convicted, he may face a prison sentence of up to five years along with a financial penalty.

Police revealed that Polyakov had made at least two previous attempts to reach the island using an inflatable kayak and had conducted thorough research on the maritime routes and access points to the area.North Sentinel Island is home to a small, isolated tribe that has shunned outside contact for millennia. The Indian government maintains a strict exclusion zone of three nautical miles around the island to protect the tribe’s health and independence. The dangers of contact are significant, not only for outsiders but also for the tribe, which lacks immunity to common illnesses. In 2018, an American missionary was killed during an unauthorized attempt to land on the island. This incident has reignited discussions regarding the influence of online fame and social media-driven adventurism on vulnerable Indigenous communities.
